Pothole Patrol: Report the bad spots in your area!

If you have ever been frustrated by a huge pothole on a street that caused a big bang that may have damaged your car as you drove over it, we think you'll appreciate this list.

Report a bad pothole in your area and possibly save someone the trouble of spending hundreds on new tires or body work for their damaged vehicle.

Here's how to report a pothole near you:

During their regularly held meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 25, the Tyler City Council unanimously voted to authorize a contract with Walker Parking Consultants/Engineers, Inc. to proceed with design of a Downtown parking garage structure.

Fifty-seven men and women became Texas Highway Patrol troopers this morning after reciting the state’s law enforcement oath and receiving their badges during a ceremony in Austin.

Texas State Representative Larry Phillips, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, was the keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony held at the LBJ Library Auditorium on the University of Texas campus.

“I congratulate the fine men and women who are graduating today and becoming Texas Highway Patrol Troopers. You have agreed to protect and defend the people of Texas, and we appreciate your service,” he told the graduates.

“Every day of the year, and every minute of the hour there is a Texas State Trooper combating crime and terrorism throughout this great state, and when you leave here today you will be joining them on the frontline of this important battle,” said Colonel Steven C.

Holiday Garbage Collection
The Tyler Solid Waste office will be closed on Monday, Jan. 16. Due to the holiday, residents whose garbage is normally collected on Monday will have their garbage collected on Tuesday and residents whose garbage is normally collected on Tuesday will have their garbage collected on Wednesday. Garbage will be collected on regularly scheduled days Thursday and Friday. The holiday will not affect curbside recycling collection.

The City of Tyler will be converting the intersection of Old Omen Road and Varsity Drive from a single stop condition to an all-way stop on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012. 

The STOP SIGNS and STOP AHEAD warning signs will be erected on north and south bound approaches of Old Omen Road at Varsity Drive.  

The University has already informed students and faculty of the proposed change

DPS reminds drivers to travel safely over holiday weekend

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers will be stepping up enforcement efforts to ensure safety on the roadways and seek out impaired drivers during the period from December 20 through January 1.

Additional troopers will be on the road targeting drunk drivers in locations where alcohol-related crashes are most likely to occur. This effort is funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for targeted DWI enforcement over various holidays throughout the year.

During the same period in 2010, troopers made 1,264 driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrests. Of those, 449 were made by troopers whose patrols were funded through the TxDOT grant. In addition, troopers issued 17,436 speeding citations, 2,426 safety restraint citations, and 2,593 no insurance citations.

SMITH COUNTY -- Construction crews working on Segment 3A of Toll 49 are scheduled to briefly halt traffic on SH 31 and SH 155 this week while bridge beams are placed over the roadways.


Crews are scheduled to be at work on SH 31 west of Tyler on Tuesday, December 27, and Wednesday, December 28, followed by the same work at SH 155 on Wednesday and Thursday.
