Positive Effects of the Stimulus Project in Tyler, by JD Meyer

Positive Effects of the Stimulus Project in Tyler, by JD Meyer

While reading an article about the Home for Heroes, I noticed that Kay Bailey Hutchinson found the money for its building through the stimulus project. A civic leader asked me to do further research into the matter. Have you noticed the orange sign near the Tyler Transit Transfer/Train Museum with “American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA)?” That’s the official name for the stimulus project.

I found most of my information through http://projects.propublica.org/recovery/locale/texas/smith, as well as through a local paper. As of May 2012, the big winners in Smith County are as follows: (1) Education ($51.8 million), (2) Dept. of Transportation ($45.8 million), (3) Small Business Administration (SBA) ($25.7 million), (4) Dept. of Veterans Affairs ($11.5 million), and (5) Social Security ($9.5 million).

DPS increasing DWI patrols for July 4th holiday

DPS increasing DWI patrols for July 4th holiday

Released by Texas Department of Public Safety:

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will increase DWI patrols for a nine-day period that includes July 4th. From June 30 – July 8, DPS troopers will focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent.

“Plan ahead. If you are drinking, make sure you have a designated driver or some other form of transportation,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “Otherwise, you could be making a very expensive or even fatal mistake.”

The enhanced patrols that target impaired driving are funded through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). DPS troopers made 1,406 DWI arrests during the July 4th enforcement effort last year, and 575 of those arrests were a direct result of the increased patrols.

Roadcheck leads to 8,000 truck and bus inspections

Released by the Texas Department of Public Safety:

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) inspected more than 8,000 commercial motor vehicles during a three-day inspection effort earlier this month as part of Roadcheck 2012. DPS Commercial Vehicle Enforcement troopers, specially trained Highway Patrol troopers and civilian inspectors joined forces from June 5 – June 7 during the annual inspection effort aimed at enhancing commercial motor vehicle safety.

Approximately 22 percent (1,763) of the 18-wheelers, buses and other commercial vehicles inspected were placed out of service for a variety of safety violations until appropriate repairs can be made. Issues with brakes, lighting and tires were the most common infractions that led to out of service violations.

Additionally, drivers were checked for compliance with state and federal laws, and 243 drivers were placed out of service.

New TxDOT site, app help motorists plan trips, avoid delays

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a new online map application, Drive Texas™, that provides travelers with real-time traffic conditions, traffic and weather feeds, as well as links to other useful travel information.

Drive Texas™ displays statewide conditions affecting travel—construction, closures, accidents—as well as a live weather feed that allows drivers to check conditions along their route.  Travelers can plot a course by entering their start and end cities to view highway conditions along their route, and they can also locate TxDOT Safety Rest Areas or Texas Travel Information Centers.  In select cities, travelers can also view images from traffic cameras, messages posted on dynamic message signs, and other detailed information.

This new site features a user-friendly interface, making it easy for the traveling public to access real-time conditions affecting travel across Texas.
