UT Tyler to Hold Patriot Preview Day Nov. 10

The University of Texas at Tyler will hold fall 2012 Patriot Preview Day for prospective students and their families 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, Sarah Bowdin, director of admissions, announced.

Check-in and on-site registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center.Activities throughout the day include campus tours, open and academic sessions and the university showcase.

Open sessions provide guidance in the overall transition to collegiate life. Academic sessions allow prospective students to receive information about degrees offered in academic departments. The university showcase will give both parents and students opportunities to meet UT Tyler faculty and student organization representatives.

Free Returning Adult Workshop set Oct. 29 at TJC

Information about starting college for the first time – or returning after a long absence – will be provided by Tyler Junior College during a free Returning Adult Workshop.

The workshop will be held 8:30 a.m.-noon Monday, Oct. 29, in Apache Rooms 1 and 2 of Rogers Student Center, located at the corner of Baxter Avenue and Lake Street.

TJC Adult Student Workshops are open to anyone 21 years or older who is interested in returning to college. They are designed for those individuals with a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED), who may be the first in their family to attend college, and who may lack financial resources for tuition, fees, books and childcare while attending college. This might include single parents, displaced homemakers, recently laid-off workers or other adults who need retraining for a new career.

TJC offers theater travel-study trip to New York City

Ever been curious about what goes on behind the scenes at a Broadway show? Here’s your chance to find out, with Theatre TJC’s annual six-day, five-night excursion to New York City, set for Tuesday-Sunday, May 28-June 2, 2013.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who’s interested in seeing the best live theatre performances today,” said Dr. David W. Crawford, Tyler Junior College theater professor. “Every day will bring a new opportunity to experience some of the best entertainment Broadway and Off-Broadway have to offer.”

Tour participants, accompanied by Crawford, will see four Broadway shows as well as two Off-Broadway performances. Other items on the itinerary include: a tour of the historic Players Club and three workshops including an audition workshop with a New York director.

The Tyler Junior College Alumni Association has a host of events planned for TJC’s Homecoming 2012 weekend Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12 and 13.

At 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, an Apache Band and Belles 65th Anniversary celebration will be held in the Center for Earth & Space Science Education at TJC.

Band alumni are encouraged to attend a 10 a.m. Saturday rehearsal with the Apache Band at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium, then perform in the stands with the Apache Band during the football game that evening.

At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon will be held in the Apache Rooms in Rogers Student Center on the TJC main campus.

Four GCS students listed in National Merit Scholarship Program

Grace Community School announced today that the following FOUR STUDENTS: RACHELLE DUNCAN, GRANT GORDON, KIRBY LEMON, and JUSTIN PAUL have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
