A congressional town hall meeting with Congressman Louie Gohmert is being sponsored by Grassroots America - We the People.

The Congressman will speak for approximately 30 minutes, followed by a Q&A period. Questions from the audience will be submitted on cards and posed by a moderator in order to maximize the time for questions.

Date: Monday, August 29, 2011

Time: 6 PM - People are urged to come early as there is limited seating.

Location: Lakeview Church of the Nazarene, 10818 University Boulevard, Spur 248, two miles from the Loop 323 intersection.

During a regular meeting of the Smith County Commissioner’s Court tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., the Court will vote to adopt the tax rate and proposed budget for fiscal year 2012.

A public hearing will be held before the vote takes place.

Judge Baker and the Commissioners will be available for comment immediately following the 9:30 meeting.

Tyler City Councilmember Donald Sanders will hold a Town Hall Meeting for residents of District 2 on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Rose Garden Center, 420 Rose Park Drive.

Residents from District 2 are invited to come meet their City Councilmember and ask questions they may have about City services. Representatives from the Police and Fire Departments as well as Oncor will be on hand to provide information about their services and programs.

Smith County receives national recognition for purchasing practices

Smith County is one of few government entities nation-wide to receive the 2011 Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award from the National Purchasing Institute, County Judge Joel Baker announced this week. This prestigious award is earned by those who demonstrate excellence, innovation, professionalism, productivity and leadership in their procurement practices.

“We have worked with the Commissioners Court to implement a lot of good procedures,” Smith County Purchasing Director Kelli Davis said. “This is a great honor for the County.”

The National Purchasing Institute is designed to establish cooperative relationships among its members and to develop efficient purchasing methods and practices in the areas of governmental, educational, and institutional procurement.  The mission of NPI is to facilitate the educational and professional development of its members.

City sales tax figures up 3.47 percent

City sales tax figures up 3.47 percent

Information from the Texas Comptroller indicates that City of Tyler sales tax revenues deposited for the month of June have increased 6.46 percent as compared to May 2011, resulting in a 3.47 percent cumulative year-to-date increase.

The reported revenue of $2,634,914.84 is comprised of $ 1,756,609.88 general sales tax revenue and $878,304.94 half-cent sales tax revenue. The figures represent receipts from April 2011 collections as there is a two-month lag before taxes are reported and remitted back to the City from the State.

County Clerk Reveals Savings

After four months in office, Smith County Clerk Karen Phillips says newly implemented policies, restructuring and research have saved the taxpayers of Smith County around $41,000.

Mrs. Phillips, who took office on the third of January, made some policy and personnel changes in the first few weeks that she says are already paying off.

The Tyler Tea Party, Inc. announced today that it will be hosting a Tax Day Rally on April 16, 2011 on the Square in downtown Tyler.  The event will last from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the public is invited.  Tammy Blair said, “We are so excited about this rally.  Our organization continues to grow as we educate people regarding the principles of our founding fathers.” 

The Tyler Tea Party, Inc is a non-profit corporation that focuses on educating the public regarding the issues facing our great country and setting out strategies on how to have our voices heard.  The Tyler Tea Party, Inc. believes:  1.
