From spayneuternoweasttx:

February is annual spay/neuter awareness month, but low-cost service providers in East Texas will continue to offer services year-round. All spay and neuter procedures are done by appointment only. A list of low-cost East Texas providers is available on the website of Spay/Neuter Support Services of East Texas at www.spayneuter-now.org/low-cost-S-N-in-East-Texas.html.

Vaccination clinics, which do not require appointments, will be held by Spay. Neuter. NOW at two local merchants in Tyler. Horaneys at 5520 Old Jacksonville Highway has donated its premises for the past year. The next clinic at 5520 Old Jacksonville Highway will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9. The veterinarian is Lynn Foster, D.V.M., with administrative support from Spay. Neuter. NOW and the 4-H Veterinary Science Club of Smith County.

Lifesaver's: Skylyr's Passion is a non-profit group committed to helping pets stay in their homes by assisting pet parents with adoption fees, vet bills, food, and other needs. LSP doesn't normally foster dogs or cats, but recently the group found it necessary in the case of one special dog whose name is Julie.

Angie Hollis, who founded the group, told us that Julie and one of her pups were surrendered to the Humane Society of NE Texas in Longview. About two weeks ago, a couple went to the humane society to adopt the pup, Scooter. However, since the two dogs had been together for the pup's entire life,  the couple decided to adopt both of the dogs.

Pets Fur People, formerly the Humane Society of East Texas, has many animals who are looking for a home of their own. Shelter pets are special and deserve our consideration when we're looking for a new "family member."

According to HumaneSociety.org,

  • Most pets end up homeless through no fault of their own—"moving" and "landlord issues" are the top reasons people give for relinquishing their pets, meaning shelters and rescue groups are full of wonderful, family-ready pets.
  • Pets adopted from shelters and rescue groups typically cost less than pets purchased or even acquired for free—once you add in the cost of vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchip, dewormer, and other "extras" included in your adoption fee, you'll probably be surprised what a bargain an adopted pet really is!

Adopt a shelter pet: Oreo needs a home!

Adopt a shelter pet: Oreo needs a home!

Oreo is a sweet one-year-old male terrier-schnauzer mix and is waiting for his new family to come adopt him at Pets Fur People, formerly the Humane Society of East Texas.

Oreo walks well on a leash, knows some basic commands and is house trained. He likes cats but would do better as the only dog in a household.

He also would do best in a household with no small children.

He has been neutered and is current on starting vaccinations, including rabies. Oreo has been microchipped for identification purposes and when adopted will receive a free gift of 30 days of free pet health insurance.

For additional information call 903 597-2471 or check the Pets Fur People website – petsfurpeople.org.  Adoption hours are Tuesday through Sunday 10 am until 5 pm - closed for lunch 1-2 pm.

Neither of the dogs were leash-trained. The shelter worker suggested that  the dogs be carried out to the car, Angie said, but the couple put a leash on Julie. Unfortunately, when the couple took the dogs outside, Julie slipped off her leash and ran away.
