Local food-lovers ignore rain, support new library farmers market

The Farmers Market at the Tyler Public Library successfully launched on Thursday, May 9.

Even with drizzling rain and cool temperatures, local food lovers came out to see what local farmers, craftsmen, artists and artisans had to offer them in their neighborhood.

Carmen Sosa, a local food activist who played a key role in getting the library market up and running, says, "During the course of my research I discovered Tyler is home to four food deserts (per the definition set up by the USDA - a community with little to no access to nutritious fresh foods )."

Setting out to remedy that solution, she worked with a group of other local food lovers, farmers and neighbors to create The East Texas Community Food Coalition which has grown to over 400 members.

Tyler:

Spontaneous truck fire could be related to 2005 recall

TYLER, TX (KLTV)- A fire that broke out in an East Texan's truck while it was sitting in the driveway Wednesday may have been related to a recall issued nearly a decade ago.

The 1999 Ford F-150 spontaneously caught on fire while parked at the Tyler home. The residents were not home.

"It made like a big whoosh noise, you could hear it," said neighbor Brian Lacy. "If you have ever thrown gasoline on a fire and heard it go up, that's what it sounded like."

Lacy was home when he saw his neighbor and longtime friend's truck go up in flames.

"I ran over and I grabbed the hose that was in the back yard and I started spraying," he said.

Bronkell Allen bought the used truck just eight months ago.

"It's very shocking," Allen said. "Very shocking, unbelievable."

Allen paid $1900 in cash for the truck and only had liability insurance. Now it's totaled, melted all the way from its engine through its passenger cab.

Need a prom dress?

Need a prom dress?

TYLER, TX (KLTV)- With prom season in full swing, some students may be stressing out about how they are going to afford a dress for their big day.

East Texas high school teacher Brynlea Cunniff is working to solve that problem. She has asked people to donate prom dresses so students can have the opportunity to attend the dance looking stylish, and it is all anonymous.

"No one sees the dresses except for the girls. And they simply look, they browse; It's like a shopping experience. They choose the one that works for them. They fill out a just like a promise that they will bring it back in good condition," Cunniff explained.

Cunniff has also worked with local businesses and make up artists who have volunteered their services for the special day.

"Everything is covered. This community has been wonderful," Cunniff said.

Truck goes up in flames in Smith Co. driveway

TYLER, TX (KLTV)- An East Texas man watched as his recently acquired pick-up truck went up in flames in his driveway Wednesday.

Bronkell Allen, who lives on West 6th Street in Tyler,  said he and his wife had left their home and were gone only about 15 minutes when they got a call from a neighbor. The neighbor told Bronkell that he needed to return home, as his truck was on fire in the driveway, very close to the home.

Allen told us that the neighbor saw the fire, and he ran outside where a passerby was trying to use the garden hose in front of the Allens' home to put out the fire. The neighbor started trying to help, as well.

The fire kept shooting higher, making louder and louder booming noises, they told Allen, as they were trying to put it out.

Tyler Fire Department responded to the call and got the fire under control. The fire spread to the corner of the roof over the carport, but firefighters were able to extinguish it.
