John Tyler opens spring football practice | News
TYLER, TEXAS (KLTV) - Spring football has begun for one of the best teams in the state of Texas.
John Tyler started their workouts with the uncertainty of who will be their head coach next year.
Two weeks ago, Dereck Rush left to become the AD/HC of Conroe Oak Ridge.
Ricklan Holmes, a JT grad, is now in control of the progam (on an interim basis), one that will likely be ranked #1 in Class 4A when the 2012 season begins.
Holmes was given a ringing endorsement by Rush, before he left, to become the next head coach of the Lions.
When asked about it the possibility of coaching his alma mater, Holmes answered:
"The community has been behind me, the kids have been behind me and the adminstration here at John Tyler has been behind me."
"The positive feedback I have gotten from everyone and everyone is praying for me hoping that they make the right decision and give me the job."
Is players echoed the sentiment.
"It should not be anyone but coach Holmes," said receiver Justin Liggins, "He has been out coach ever since we stepped on this campus, he has been pushing us in the weight room and on the field, nothing has really changed."
Tyler ISD has said they will stop taking applications for the JT job on May 1st.
It is unknown when a decision regarding the job is expected to be made.
