Petition for alcohol sales starts today
News

EAST TEXAS (KLTV)- The first signatures were signed this morning on a petition get alcohol sales in East Texas towns, including the city of Tyler.

The group, "Buy Local First", wants to legalize beer and wine sales in the city of Tyler, and in Smith County precinct 2, which includes Flint, Noonday, and Bullard.

They need 7800 signatures in the city of Tyler to get the ballot in Tyler.

And they need 6700 signatures in JP 2, which again is southwestern Tyler, Flint, Noonday and Bullard for a second precinct 2 ballot.

Citizens who live in the overlapping areas can actually sign the petition twice.

Committee member Bob Westbrook says he feels confident they will get the signatures needed.

"The committee didn't make a decision until we received the polling data back in December that it was something that we really needed to consider to pursue, and then after the first of the year discussions got even more serious about whether or not we needed to proceed with this," said Westbrook.

"It's time for us to do this. The primaries are coming up. We'll be able to collect signatures at the primary poll locations, as long as we stay outside the local boundary line. The  citizens of Tyler, the responsible business owners and community leaders just want the citizens to have an opportunity to vote on it."

The committee has 60 days to petition for alcohol sales.

They expect opposition from newly wet stores in Winona and Troup, and stores on wet/dry lines.
