Released by the City of Tyler:
Keep Tyler Beautiful and the Tyler Solid Waste Department are working together to increase the number of City of Tyler residents who take advantage of the City’s Curbside Recycling Service.
Residents recently received a brochure in their water bills explaining this convenient service and encouraging subscription for recycling as part of Keep Tyler Beautiful’s subscription drive.
Currently, about 12 percent of the City’s 28,500 residential trash customers recycle.
The Solid Waste Department started curbside pickup of recyclable materials in 1999. The subscription fee at that time was $3.25 per month. With the addition of semi-automated trucks and the City-supplied orange top containers, the cost for this optional service dropped to only $2.50 per month which is added to the resident’s water bill.
“This is an easy way for Tyler residents to participate in recycling,” said Keep Tyler Beautiful Board Chair Phyllis Carlyle. “There is no separating, no sorting, the City provides the cart and the cost is very reasonable.”
The City picks up the recycling at the curb twice each month and there is no need to separate or bag recyclable materials. Materials accepted in the curbside program include:
- Steel/tin cans (rinsed and crushed)
- Newspapers and magazines
- Aluminum cans (rinsed and crushed)
- Mixed office paper (no shredded paper)
- Cardboard and paperboard (boxes broken down flat)
- #1 PET plastic, such as soda, water, juice bottles (rinsed and crushed)
- #2 HDPE plastic ALL COLORS, such as milk jugs, detergent bottles (rinsed and
crushed)
Glass is not accepted in the curbside program.
This program is open to City of Tyler residents whose water and trash service is in their name. Signing up for this program can be done online at www.tylerrecycles.com or by calling the Solid Waste office at (903) 531-1388.
