New FAA grant announced for Tyler Pounds Regional Airport

New FAA grant announced for Tyler Pounds Regional Airport

From the City of Tyler:

With an initiative to enhance safe aircraft taxi operations from the airport commercial terminal and provide needed space for corporate development on the airport, Tyler Pounds Regional Airport has been awarded a new FAA grant totaling $7,033,313.  Pending approval from the City for the required 10 percent matching funds, the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration will provide funding to construct a new taxiway near the commercial airport terminal and also to initiate required environmental assessments to reconstruct Tyler runway 04/22.

“The airport’s hangar space and land available for future airside development is fully occupied, so all future growth for general aviation and aviation industrial facilities will rely on this project moving forward,” said Airport Manager Davis Dickson.

Tips to avoid a moving scam

Tips to avoid a moving scam

Released by the Better Business Bureau:

As the busiest time of the year for changing residences approaches, BBB and the American Moving and Storage Association encourage consumers to follow a few simple rules before hiring a moving company.

Every year BBB and AMSA receive thousands of complaints from consumers who have fallen prey to dishonest and often unlicensed moving companies. In a too-frequent, worst-case scenario, the moving company holds the customer's belongings “hostage” and requires potentially thousands of dollars to unload the van.

“Anyone can claim to be a mover, so checking a mover's credentials is critical, plus it’s very easy to do”, said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas.

City 2011 E-Annual report online today

Released by the City of Tyler:

For the second consecutive year, the City of Tyler has published its Annual Report as an E-Book, with linked video, and as a printed document with QR Codes.  The 20-page report outlines the financial status of the City and highlights new programs and achievements from 2011.

“Because city revenue has continued to be lower than anticipated, we again made the decision to forgo printing the 25,000 copies of the annual report that we have printed in past years,” commented Mayor Barbara Bass.  “By choosing to publish the report electronically, we have saved nearly $10,000.  Also, the E-report is more interactive and environmentally friendly.”

Tips for handling debt collectors

Tips for handling debt collectors

Released by the Better Business Bureau of Central East Texas:

Consumers who owe money or are behind on their bills may be legitimately contacted by debt collectors to pay off debts.  In a recent release of the top complaints reported to BBB, collection agencies ranked 5th in number of complaints received.  With more than 15,000 complaints, consumers need to be aware of the best practices for when it comes to handling debt collectors.

“Be wary of the red flags for fraudulent debt collectors”, said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas. “Refusing to reveal the name of their agency or demands that the payments be made in cash or money transfer only, could mean that a phony debt collector is making an attempt at identity theft”.

It’s important for consumers to verify the alleged debt before taking action.

Tips for teens and employers as summer hiring begins

Tips for teens and employers as summer hiring begins

Released by Texas Workforce Commission:

As summer approaches, the number of teenagers looking for work increases dramatically. According to a 2011 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) study, the number of 16- to 19-year-olds employed or searching for work last year skyrocketed between April and July, increasing by more than 1.6 million workers to a total of almost 7 million in July1.

“The Texas Workforce Commission is committed to helping prepare Texas’ future workforce for competition in the global marketplace, and summer jobs are an important part of that equation,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Tom Pauken. “These jobs can help Texas high school students learn the value of hard work and dependability while earning their own income.”

TWC reminds employers, workers and parents to familiarize themselves with state and federal laws, as well as safety regulations that address child labor issues.
