Kidd Kraddick winner Matthew Davidson set to perform at ETX State Fair Friday | Arts & Culture
Shreveport's Matthew Davidson Band, with 13 year-old prodigy Matthew Davidson at the helm, is set to play this Friday night, Sept. 23, 2011, at the East Texas State Fair. This is going to be a great show for young and old alike! Matthew is exciting to watch perform, and his talent will surprise even veteran guitarists.
Matthew, according to his website, matthewdavidson.net, began "playing" his first guitar, a toy, when he was a three-year-old. He started taking lessons (on a real guitar, this time) when he was a second grader, and has been learning and gaining many accolades ever since.
Also according to his website, Matthew "won his first electric guitar in the 2007 James Burton Guitar Showdown. He was the youngest of eight student guitarists selected to play with Kenny Wayne Shepherd at his 2009 Artbreak Concert.
Matthew performed in the Youth Showcase at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and while there jammed at the B. B. King Blues Club. He also was selected to perform in the “Texas 10 under 20 Showcase” at the Dallas International Guitar Festival. He has played at the B.B. King Museum and the B.B. King Homecoming Concert in Indianola, MS and the Delta Blues Fest in Greenville, MS, where in addition to his own set, he sat in with Honeyboy Edwards for a few songs.
Matthew played at the Cat Head Delta Blues store and the famous Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, MS during the 2010 Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival. He has performed at New Orleans JazzFest, Music City Texas Theater in Linden, TX, and on the stage of the legendary Municipal Auditorium, home of the famed Louisiana Hayride.
Matthew has had the honor of sharing the stage with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Osborn, Maggie Warwick, Brady Blade, Jerry Beach, Patrick Stump, and Bugs Henderson. Matthew is the youngest member to date of the American Federation of Musicians Local 116, having joined at the age of twelve.
Most recently, Matthew was selected to be the guitarist for the 2011 “Kidd Kraddick in the Morning” Rock Camp Band. The week-long camp was held in July at the Kidd Kraddick studio in Irving, Texas. Four young musicians were selected from a group of over 300 applicants. During the camp, the band, named Breaking Even, composed an original song which was professionally recorded, created a music video, and performed live on the air on Kidd Kraddick in the Morning, which is a nationally syndicated radio show. The single recorded by the band, “You Won’t Admit”, is available on iTunes. Breaking Even appeared on ABC Channel 8 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area on a special primetime edition of “Good Morning, Texas.” They also performed with Patrick Stump at his Dallas House of Blues concert."
According to American Blues News, the band plays "a solid mix of blue and guitar-oriented classic rock." Matthew is also working on some original material, but is so busy playing gigs (and, of course, studying for school) that his writing and composing time is limited.
Kick off your weekend with Matthew and his band on the ETX Fair main stage, just south of Harvey Convention Center, from 7:00pm-9:30pm Friday night.
We'll see you at the fair!
