Possible football stadium renovations cause controversy in Tyler

TYLER, TX (KLTV)- The Tyler ISD School Board's proposal to renovate Tyler Rose Stadium has stirred up controversy. With plans to replace the turf came the proposition to expand the field so it could double as a regulation size soccer stadium. But bringing soccer in would push track out.

"The changes that they're going to make would be tantamount to an eviction, an eviction of an event that has long been a tradition of our community for thirty-something years," says Andrew Melontree, Sr.

Each year the Tyler Rose Stadium hosts the Rose Parade, Friday night football and the Earl Campbell-Emma Barrett Relays.

However, if the field is expanded to accommodate soccer, two of the seven track lanes would be eliminated, making the stadium unsuitable to host those historic relays. It's a thought that former Tyler City Councilman and Smith County Commissioner Andrew Melontree says is just unbearable.

School district may join movement against relying on state standardized testing

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV)- An East Texas superintendent wants his district to join many more in telling state leaders 'enough is enough' when it comes to relying on state tests to rate campuses.

Dr. Randy Reid told KLTV 7 the school board is looking over a resolution that is spreading statewide. The resolution asks state leaders to move away from standardized tests like this year's STAAR test to rate campus performance. Instead, Reid suggested the state look at each district's end-of course exams.

"What we're trying to say with this resolution is that we agree wholeheartedly with accountability for schools in the State of Texas," Reid said. "We also believe that we've entered a period maybe where testing has taken a life of its own and maybe has gotten outside of the realm of being helpful and has become such a burden to many of the school districts around the state that it may actually be impeding our ability to educate kids.

TISD may join movement to end statewide standardized tests

TYLER, TX (KLTV)-

The leader of one of East Texas' largest school district is wanting to join a statewide movement-- away from standardized tests.

Tyler ISD Superintendent Randy Reid said Friday that he and the board are looking over a resolution that is spreading statewide. It asks state lawmakers to move away from standardized tests like this year's STAAR test, and instead rely more on the district's end of course exams.

"We just want to make sure that any evaluation system really looks for more than just that single snapshot on one particular day on one particular test," Reid said, "That's an important piece of it but its not all there is."

Reid told me that other school districts are looking at this same resolution. Tyler's school board will re-visit the issue next month.
