UPDATE: Grass fire threatened structures in Smith County

UPDATE: Officials tell KLTV that the fire has burned between 3 and 4 acres and is now contained. The fire is just south of County Road 45 and east of Highway 110.

The fire started when a brush pile that was being burned got out of control. Crews have the fire out, but are using plows to dig a plow line around the area.

Two structures were threatened, but were not affected and are no longer in danger.

Officials tell us even though we have had rain lately, it is very dry and very windy today, so they suggest not to burn until we get more rain.

Former East Texan asks for DNA testing to clear his name of a 35 year old murder

Thirteen years ago Kerry Max Cook walked out of jail a free man, but according to paperwork he filed in Smith County Tuesday, he feels anything but free with the 1977 murder of Linda Jo Edwards on his record.

For 35 years Cook has continued to proclaim his innocence.

According to court documents, Kerry Max Cook's attorneys say, "Because of Smith County's decades-long persecution of an innocent man, Linda Jo Edwards' true killer has never been punished."

In the motion filed by Cook's attorney's, they say the investigation of Edwards' murder "was so badly executed and managed that no confidence can be placed in the work that both led up to and followed Mr. Cook's wrongful conviction."

Helping aging parents avoid financial fraud

Released by the Better Business Bureau:

Fraud targeting senior citizens is a growing concern as millions have fallen victim to scammers. Better Business Bureau encourages families to keep the lines of communication open with their elders regarding finances and to recognize some common cons targeting senior citizens.

According to a June 2010 survey by Investor Protection Trust, more than 7.3 million senior citizens—roughly 20 percent of Americans aged 65 or older--already have “been taken advantage of financially in terms of an inappropriate investment, unreasonably high fees for financial services, or outright fraud.”

“Having a serious conversation with your elderly parents about how they are managing their money is not easy, but it is extremely important in order to help protect them from unscrupulous crooks,” said Alison Southwick, BBB spokesperson.
