UT Health Northeast microbiologist honored for her excellence by national society

Barbara Brown-Elliott, MS, supervisor of the internationally known Mycobacteria/Nocardia Laboratory at UT Health Northeast, received the 2013 Scherago-Rubin Award from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) on Sunday, May 19, 2013, during its annual meeting in Denver, Colo.

This is the most prestigious award given worldwide to a bench-level microbiologist, someone who works in a lab studying and identifying microbes such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mycobacteria. It is awarded for excellent performance in the clinical laboratory.

“I was thrilled and honored to receive this award. It was especially meaningful for me to have people that I so much admire nominate me. I am grateful for everyone at UT Health Northeast who has supported me during the almost 25 years that I have worked here,” Brown-Elliott said.

City of Tyler Launches Public Art Program

The City of Tyler Main Street Department is launching its new Outdoor Public Art on Loan (OPAL) project.

The project will result in the exhibit of six large works of sculpture throughout the downtown area. The Main Street Department, in cooperation with the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition (DTAC) and Heart of Tyler, Inc., has issued a request for proposals to sculptors throughout the region.

Exhibit sites were chosen by a DTAC volunteer committee comprised of sculptors, architects, landscape architects and others. A jury will select the six pieces that will go on display. Pieces will be installed in September 2013 and remain in place until July 2014.

Each artist whose work is selected will receive a $1,000 stipend and be honored at an opening reception on Oct. 4 at Gallery Main Street. Each piece of art will have a QR code, which will be linked to a webpage devoted to the artist’s work.

Women ostracized from child birth complications find hope in Mercy Ships

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV)-      A global organization that calls East Texas their home, is working to improve the lives of women impacted by obstetric fistulas.

An obstetric fistula occurs after child birth complications leave an internal hole in a woman's body. The World Health Organization estimates that there are 50-100,000 new cases of obstetric fistula each year.

It's not so much of a problem in the United States because of our advanced medical care, but in Africa, East Texas based Mercy Ships has preformed 2,800 obstetric fistula related procedures on women with the condition.

In the U.S., about 1 in 7,500 women die in child birth each year. In West Africa, that statistic is 1 in 12.

Of the women who live, many have their bodies destroyed by obstetric fistulas.
